The 48-year-old victim has been in a vegetative state at Cooper University Hospital for nearly three years.
CAMDEN -- A Camden man was convicted Friday of kidnapping a woman he had previously assaulted and shot her before dumping her and leaving her to die in a vacant lot.
The Camden County Prosecutor's Office said a jury found 34-year-old Allan Mattocks guilty of kidnapping, attempted murder, witness tampering, witness retaliation, conspiracy, aggravated assault and weapons charges in connection with the 2013 incident.
Assistant Prosecutor Victoria Shilton argued during the trial that Mattocks, who was facing assault charges for attacking the victim in April of 2012, tried to kill the 48-year-old woman in order to silence her and prevent his conviction on the assault charge.
The victim was found shot in the head and dumped in a vacant lot of Rand Street in April of 2013. Authorities said she remains in a vegetative state at Cooper University Hospital.
Another Camden man, 22-year-old Jonathan Kearney is due to stand trial on charges he helped Mattocks cover up the crime. The pair are accused of taking the vehicle Mattocks used to kidnap the victim and burning it in Philadelphia.
Mattocks faces a maximum sentence of 83 years in state prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 8.
