Police break off Turnpike pursuit of stolen car

Police said the car was reported stolen in Maryland.

CARNEYS POINT TWP. -- State Police pursuing a stolen car on the New Jersey Turnpike broke off the chase in Salem County on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Police spotted a silver Buick Lucerne, reported stolen in Maryland, traveling southbound on the turnpike in Camden County.

The vehicle contained a LoJack vehicle recovery system and the company monitoring the system reported that the vehicle was traveling on the turnpike, state police said. Troopers spotted the car in Barrington and gave chase.

The fleeing car reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to scanner reports, and was passing other cars on the shoulder as it traveled through Woolwich Township in Gloucester County.

Troopers broke off the pursuit near Interchange 1 in Carneys Point prior to the toll plaza, police said.

Scanner reports indicated that the vehicle didn't pass through the toll plaza.

Carneys Point Police indicated they had no reports of a car being sought in the area.
