Police said the man tried to assault the people who attacked him, but he ended up getting struck by his own pipe in the fight.

GLOUCESTER CITY --  A city man and his brother are facing assault charges Tuesday after authorities said the two tried to get revenge on individuals for a previous attack by assaulting them with iron pipes.

Police said the incident began on March 26 at about 5:40 p.m. when Robert Mortimer, 23, reported he was attacked and punched in the face while walking with his son near Market and Atlantic streets. The punch caused two of his teeth to fall out. Police were unable to locate the suspect at the time.

About 45 minutes later however, Mortimer and his 20-year-old brother Christopher Mortimer returned to the scene carrying iron pipes looking for revenge.

Robert Mortimer wound up getting his pipe taken from him and was struck with it repeatedly, police said. He faces one charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. His brother held on to his pipe, using it to attack and injure three people.

Christopher Mortimer faces three counts of aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Both remain in Camden County Jail in lieu of bail.
