St. Baldrick's Foundation event to raise money for childhood cancer research

BLACKWOOD -- On April 10 the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at The Palace Catering, 109 N. Black Horse Pike in Blackwood. More than 100 people, men, women and children will shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to conquer childhood cancers.

Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the United States will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick's Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease.

We are honoring two children in the community Nicole Cristella, and Nico Cassabria. Nicole is fortunate enough that her last scans have come back clean, showing no signs of cancer for that we are grateful. Nico on the other hand is battling stage 4 neuroblastoma, and his last scans have shown the cancer has not grown, but is stable. Nico is a strong 8-year-old boy that continues to fight the fight, however the members of Blackwood Fire Company refuse to let him fight the fight alone. Nicole and Nico have been made honorary members of the fire department, and will continue to help them in this battle.

A classic car show has been included on the day of the event, register at BFCcarshow@gmail.com -- $25 the day of the event. Chance auctions and 50/50 raffles will be held throughout the day. The fire company is seeking vendors, -- $25 for the space plus 10 percent of the profits. There will be music, face painting and food. A $10 donation is asked, at the door. Bring the family, enjoy the day.

The last three years hundreds of people have shaved their heads, with community involvement from local schools, and raised over $100,000. This year we hope for bigger and better.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. St. Baldrick's coordinates its signature head-shaving events worldwide where participants collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, raising money to fund research. Since 2005, St. Baldrick's has awarded more than $127 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants.
