SALEM -- Good news came Thursday evening for commuters traveling southbound on the Delaware Memorial Bridge after the third lane after several days of closures due to emergency repairs to suspension cables.
Three of the four lanes on the southbound span were shut Tuesday afternoon and the speed limit was decreased to 35 mph, causing severe traffic jams and congestion.
A second lane reopened Wednesday night and the Delaware River and Bay Authority opened the third lane at 7:37 p.m. Thursday. The speed limit was also increased from 35 to 50 mph.
Commercial vehicles are still restricted to the right two lanes only.
Major road work near the bridge
Construction crews have focused on repair work involving the replacement of a few suspension ropes in close proximity.
While work continues, the left lane will remain closed, according to DRBA Spokesman Jim Salmon.
At this time, motorists traveling south on the New Jersey Turnpike or Interstate 295 should not experience delays.
Officials are still urging drivers to be careful and stay alert around construction zones.
