Two South Jersey men are facing drug and weapons charges.

WINSLOW TWP. -- Two South Jersey men are facing drug possession and weapons charges after being caught last week allegedly carrying packets of heroin and a loaded handgun, township police said Tuesday.

Winslow police officer Matthew Regan was conducting a radar patrol along Williamstown Road when a silver Land Rover sped by him shortly before 8 p.m. last Thursday. The SUV passed other vehicles on the road after the office started to pursue it. It eventually stopped at Taunton and Tansboro roads, police said.

James Thomas, 48, of Berlin, was behind the wheel at the time, police said. He was arrested for driving under the influence and a search by police reportedly revealed 17 packets of heroin and a bullet in his pocket.

Jameel Johnson, 26, of West Berlin, was the passenger during the incident. He was arrested as a result of an outstanding warrant. The loaded handgun was later found inside the Land Rover as police investigation continued.

Thomas was charged with possession of heroin, possession of a handgun, certain persons not to have a weapon and multiple motor vehicle offenses. Johnson was also charged with possession of a handgun and possessing hollow-point bullets, police said.

Both had bail set at $100,000 full-cash and both were sent to the Camden County Correctional Facility in default.
