The school earned an Environmental Community Service Award and a $5,000 grant

WINSLOW TWP. --  The students in Ross Cruz's Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) class at Winslow Township Middle School (WTMS) are creating something special in their classroom, and were rewarded for it when the program received the Environmental Community Service Award and $5,000 on April 20.

WTMS was one of only two schools to receive the award and grant this year, which was presented by Wawa, 6ABC, and Manko, Gold, Katcher, and Fox, LLP. The organizations have presented the award to school districts with nature programs designed to improve communities every year around Earth Day for the past decade. Cruz is leading seventh- and eighth-grade classes at WTMS in creating a sustainable hydroponics system. The Environmental STEM program is in its first year at the district.

"This is an awesome class for the kids to have and they really do enjoy it," said Cruz. "They're looking at things differently, and the whole point is to give them a different perspective."

"I was extremely impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the students in the Winslow Township Middle School Environmental STEM program and how much they had accomplished with the hydroponic gardens. We hope that the Environmental Community Service Award, which they so richly earned, will enable them to take the project to the next level and further enhance their learning experience," said Bruce S. Katcher, Esq. at Manko, Gold, Katcher, and Fox, LLP.

This is not the first time the WTMS STEM program has been recognized by the community; Home Depot previously donated aprons and waived fees for the classes.
