High levels of mercury spread through an NJ aquarium business.

CLEMENTON -- A South Jersey aquarium business has been shut down after two decades when mercury was discovered in a fish tank, 6abc reports.

The Aquarium Center, located at the Commerce Plaza II was closed down after the mercury -- which is a toxic and potentially deadly chemical -- was found inside a fish tank, reports say.

Mercury was discovered May 9. Employees attempted to clean out the chemical, which killed fish in the tank, and the mercury spread, according to reports.

The mercury levels were 10,000 times the acceptable level of .05 milligrams per cubic meter and 12 staff members are being tested through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A criminal investigation is being conducted by Gloucester Township Police and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is involved.
