Gregory Cleveland, 27, was found by police staggering in the street.

CAMDEN -- In the city's second Sunday slaying, a 27-year-old Camden man was killed in a late afternoon shooting that remains under investigation, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

A ShotSpotter activation at around 5:40 p.m. alerted Camden County police to gunfire near the Centennial Village apartment complex. Another officer in the area at the time heard the gunshots and saw the victim, Gregory Cleveland, "staggering in the street," according to the prosecutor's office.

He collapsed in the street and was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m., authorities said.

"It startled everybody," a North 10th Street resident who didn't want to be identified said Monday morning of the gunshots. "It was loud."

The Camden City resident of more than a decade said police canvassed the block, but nobody knew anything. The resident added that he recalled seeing a handful of evidence markers in the street and a firetruck later coming along to wash away what he believed to be blood.

Others approached near the scene declined comment. Some said they were aware of the shooting, but not of a motive or the victim.

There have been 23 homicides in Camden County so far this year -- with just three occurring outside of the city limits, according to information from the prosecutor's office.

Earlier Sunday, 41-year-old Curtis Chambers was found inside of a residence after Camden County Police Department officers responded to the 1200 block of Whitman Avenue at around 12:30 a.m.

The investigation into Cleveland's death continues and no arrests had been made as of late Monday morning.
