"Operation Prom: Mock Crash" was an eye-opening demonstration for high school students.

CHERRY HILL TWP. -- A smashed car, "bodies" strewn about and a DUI arrest: township high school students were face-to-face with what could happen if drinking and driving is part of the plan on prom night.

"Operation Prom: Mock Crash," a recent demonstration put on by Cherry Hill's police and fire departments for Cherry Hill East and West High School students, gave a blow-by-blow look at emergency and law enforcement response to an all-to-possible scene.

The scenario included four high students who had been drinking at an after-prom party. Police say the vehicle spun out of control, struck a telephone pole and ejected an unrestrained passenger in the process.

Police and fire officials arrived at the scene, pronouncing one of the students dead while actual students looked on. The driver was removed and police conducted a sobriety test, later arresting him for being intoxicated. The two students seated in the back of the vehicle were extricated by the fire department.

Cherry Hill police say the four "victims" later gave their thoughts on the program to fellow students, saying it was a "valuable" exercise that would make them think twice before making such a decision in real life.
