Borden officialy began his position on July 6.
GLOUCESTER TWP. - The Camden County College Board of Trustees and the freeholder board welcomed Don Borden as the college's new president on June 30. Borden will officially began his position on July 6 with an abundance of plans and programs he would like to initiate as president.
Some of his initiatives include increasing student support with tutorials and early morning services as well as making available more college credits at a high school level so more students can jumpstart their college career.
Borden also plans to create more partnerships with districts in Camden County as as well as four-year universities, including Rutgers University.
With 40 years of education experience, Borden is "ready to prepare students to be more successful in the future."
As a former superintendent and principal in his hometown of Audubon, the new college president comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge.
But who is Don Borden off campus? What's he like? What are his hobbies?
Here's a list of 5 things you didn't know about the new CCC president:
1. He loves U.S. history
Before they had kids, Borden and his wife, Alice, traveled across the country to hit as many historical landmarks as they possibly could. Both history buffs (Alice is a U.S. History teacher in Haddon Heights), the couple visited Yosemite National Park, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone National Park and Little Bighorn Battlefield among others.
2. He's into health and fitness
"I'm a big believer that energy creates energy," he said. Borden initially went to school for athletics, "but it didn't work out," he joked. He remains active by running and playing in a basketball league.
3. He was a part of his school's History Honor Society
Borden was a history major at Glassboro State College, where he was one of the founding members of the History Honor Society. His graduate degree was in educational leadership at Rowan University.
4. He's a huge fan of Abraham Lincoln
Borden claims he's read just about every publication on the 16th president. "I admire his ability to persevere and to overcome disappointment," he said. "I hope I can be more like that, more tenacious about overcoming things." But he has no interest in visiting Ford's Theatre, the site of Lincoln's assassination, in Washington, D.C. He said he wants to celebrate and remember the good things about Lincoln, not the tragedy.
5. He's a "shore guy"
Borden, his wife and their four children spend a lot of time down at the shore, Wildwood Crest to be exact. "It's the best kept secret in New Jersey," he said.
