The 11-year-old and 9-year-old were taken by helicopter to Cooper University Hospital Sunday.

WINSLOW TWP. -- The boys whose all-terrain vehicle was struck by a pickup truck Sunday on North Grove Street suffered numerous broken bones, according to a relative of one child.

Michele Wilson said her 11-year-old grandson, Kasey Holmes, was driving the vehicle on the sidewalk with another 9-year-old boy riding with him when they decided to cross the road.

Police said the all-terrain vehicle was struck by a truck driven by Paul Pascu, 57, of Sicklerville.

Both boys, who are from Magnolia, were flown by helicopter to Cooper University Hospital, police said.

Wilson said Holmes broke both jaw bones and underwent surgery Monday. The 9-year-old has a broken leg, she said.

Reached Tuesday, Winslow Lt. Christopher Dubler said he had no new information about the crash, including whether any charges were expected.

He said that accidents and other ATV-related issues are not new in Winslow. The township's quarries often draw riders as well as swimmers, but many are riding in off-limits areas.

The 200 block of North Grove Street is not especially close to any of the typical off-roading spots, Dubler said, but it is near the railroad tracks, where people sometimes ride illegally.

He said police there try to be proactive about deterring riders from illegally riding in the township, and it may be time for another enforcement sweep.

Generally, that means going to the off-roading areas on quads and ticketing anyone who is riding illegally on public or private property or without registered vehicles.

The township also has experience with youth being killed or seriously hurt in all-terrain vehicle accidents, although it has been a while.

In 2008, two teens were injured and one killed when the ATV they were riding on crossed Route 73 and was struck by a car. The driver, a 15-year-old Winslow boy, was later sentenced to probation for causing the death of a 13-year-old Sicklerville girl and the injury of a 15-year-old Berlin girl.

The previous year, a 13-year-old girl was killed when her quad was hit by a train on the tracks of the Atlantic City Line.
