An 84-year-old woman in a blue Dodge Neon was in a head on collision with a male driving a BMW this morning, causing major traffic delays.
SECAUCUS - An 84-year-old woman is in critical condition after she was involved in a two-car crash while driving the wrong way on Route 3 this morning, Secaucus police said.
The Cherry Hill woman had to be cut out of her Dodge Neon after the crash, which occurred at 7:45 a.m. on the westbound side of the roadway on the Hackensack River bridge.
Secaucus police Capt. Dennis Miller said the woman was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes, causing the crash with a BMW headed in the proper direction. Both drivers were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. The driver of the BMW, a Secaucus man, is listed in stable condition, Miller said.
The 84-year-old woman was extricated by the Secaucus firefighters, Miller said. The Dodge neon was mangled in the crash and the top of the car appeared to be cut off to remove the woman from the vehicle.
The crash kept all but one lane on westbound Route 3 closed for more than two hours, and caused major delays on both sides of the highway. At one point, there were 15 police and emergency vehicles on the bridge just east of MetLife Stadium.
