Jason Eitner's leave comes after the board of education voted on the matter at its meeting Wednesday. School Business Administrator Dan Fox, who is serving as acting superintendent, confirmed the board's action Friday.

Board of education President Terri Chiddenton said the board's vote comes after the board commissioned two investigations into Eitner.

Reached Friday, Eitner said he could not give details because of the ongoing investigation, but added it does not involve any allegations of illegal activity. He also said he expects it will be wrapped up soon and he may be able to return to work before the end of the 60-day period.

Chiddenton said the board's inquiry began in the spring. In the summer, the board hired a "conflict counselor" who did more investigating and recommended the board consider placing Eitner on 60 days paid leave.

"He's been investigating quite a few grievances," Chiddenton said. She also characterized them as complaints, but said she would not disclose who lodged the complaints.

Eitner said of the investigation, "People are entitled to say what they want and to have their claims followed through on."

Chiddenton said she was limited in what details she could give because it is a personnel issue. Still, she said many people in the community are aware that the board has been discussing issues regarding Eitner and is divided over them.

"Anyone whose going to our board meetings knows," she said. "This has been out in the open."

The vote to put Eitner on leave was seven in favor, with two members abstaining and none opposed.

The board hired Eitner in August 2015. He previously worked as chief school administrator at Lower Alloways Creek Townhip School starting in 2013.He worked before that as a social studies coordinator in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District, in Mercer County.

He runs a website, EitnerEducation.com, that offers educational professional development tools and services. The website says he has won awards including the 2015 Educators Voice Award and was named a "2016 Educator To Watch" by the national Academy of Arts & Sciences.
