WINSLOW TWP. -- Winslow Township School District Superintendent H. Major Poteat, Ed.D., has been selected by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA) as one of three regional 2017 Superintendents of the Year; Poteat is the Southern Regional Winner. In June 2016, Poteat also was named the 2017 Camden County Superintendent of the Year.

The three regional Superintendents of the Year were introduced at the NJASA Executive Committee's meeting at the 2016 Annual Fall Workshop in Atlantic City on Oct. 26. The workshop is co-sponsored by NJASA, the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) and the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials (NJASBO).

A lifelong educator, Poteat has been the Superintendent of Winslow Township School District since 2008. Previously he was the Superintendent of Schools in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and an Assistant Superintendent in Paterson, before coming to Winslow.

Poteat began his career as a classroom teacher in New Castle, Delaware. Over the years, he has held such positions as human relations specialist, assistant principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels, high school principal, director of secondary education, chief administrative officer, and assistant superintendent. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from West Chester University, his Master of Arts in Education Administration from Villanova University, Superintendent's Letter of Eligibility from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

"All three regional superintendents are excellent role models for all aspiring chief education officers to emulate," said NJASA Executive Director Richard G. Bozza. "They are results-oriented educators who continually strive to improve the quality of education for all students they serve."

"The Winslow Township School District has made a complete turnaround under the leadership of Dr. Poteat," said School Board President Cheryl Pitts. "Our students are achieving academically, our schools and facilities are well maintained, and he has brought respectability to the district."

The other two regional superintendents are Adam Frid, Harrington Park School District - Northern Regional winner; and Ross Kasun, Freehold Township School District - Central Regional winner, who was selected as the 2017 New Jersey State Superintendent of the Year.

Poteat and his wife, Danet, have two daughters and live in Burlington County.
