A Camden man and his wife were wounded after police responded to a 911 call. Watch video

CAMDEN -- Jose Antonio Fernandez-Ventura, the man shot Wednesday by police responding to a domestic violence incident, was actively striking his wife when a 911 call reporting the alleged attack was made.

The caller -- who identified himself as a relative of the female victim also wounded during the incident -- is heard in an audio recording obtained by NJ Advance Media via a public records request.

"My sister-in-law's husband was hitting her and he has a gun," the unidentified man says through an interpreter required for the Jan. 11 call. "She just came into my room and she stated that he was hitting her and he said that he would kill her," the caller relays through an interpreter.

"I don't know where he might have it," the caller said when asked by the dispatcher where Fernandez-Ventura's alleged weapon is.

"You should make them get here soon because he's hitting her now," the caller says before being transferred to the CCPD.

"Where? Where's the gun?" the dispatcher asks. "He has it with him," the man responds.

It was approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when Camden County Police Department (CCPD) officers responded to the 2700 block of Federal Street as a result of that 911 call.

According to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, a 1-and-a-half-year-old child was seated at the top of the second floor stairs while the female victim -- whose identity was redacted by authorities -- was sitting on a sofa and holding an 8-month-old child in her lap.

Fernandez-Ventura, 38, of Camden, allegedly pointed a firearm at the woman and the infant, discharging it at "close range," the prosecutor's office said Friday. He was still holding a weapon and approaching the woman when he was shot by an officer, authorities said.

Both Fernandez-Ventura and the woman were hospitalized. The prosecutor's office declined to say Friday whether rounds fired by Fernandez-Ventura or police struck the woman.

Fernandez-Ventura is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The officer who shot Fernandez-Ventura has been placed on administrative leave as the prosecutor's office investigates
