The center is a state-of-the-art substance abuse treatment center
LAUREL SPRINGS -- AJ Solomon, co-founder of Victory Bay Recovery Center, sat front and center at the 2017 State of the State address as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie discussed the disease of addiction and efforts to improve treatment options and Sober Living reform.
There is no shortage of statistics to support the need for improved care. As outlined by Christie in his address, "Drug overdose deaths escalated by nearly 22 percent in New Jersey between the year 2014 and 2015, largely due to opioids. There was a 30 percent increase in heroin deaths over the previous year. Nearly 1,600 people lost their lives to drugs in New Jersey in 2015 ... more than four times the number of murders ... and three times the number of people that were killed in a car." He went on to add, "According to the surgeon general, an American dies every 19 minutes from an overdose of heroin or prescription opioids."
Opening this February, Victory Bay Recovery Center will provide a continuum of care to those in need of treatment and is committed to staying connected to its clients to create a sober community of support. Its mission is to provide effective treatment to those touched by addiction.
To Solomon, the Governor's proposals are personal. He was a kid who dabbled with drinking in high school; but eventually stumbled upon a painkiller that led him down the path to using heroin throughout college. Upon graduation from the University of Pittsburgh, Gov. Christie's staff hired him to work on the Advance Team, helping to set up town halls and press conferences. During and after his tenure on the Advance Team, AJ struggled with his addiction and ended up homeless in Florida. AJ's story is one of many but has a good ending -- he eventually entered a substance abuse treatment facility in Arizona and has remained sober thanks to regular attendance at 12-step programs and a fellowship that has grown around him.
Recognizing he was in a position to make a difference, he made amends for his past transgressions with Gov. Christie and in turn was asked his thoughts on ways to help bring more sustainable recovery to New Jersey through Sober Living and its regulations.
"Because of the actions taken by the governor, the clients at Victory Bay, and those around the state, will be able to finally receive appropriate aftercare and extended treatment in safe, properly staffed living environments as they seek to recover from addiction," says Solomon. "We have found long term sobriety to be more successful through a continuum of care and have structured Victory Bay to provide varied levels of treatment."
