Project: Prom is a free prom dress giveaway at Camden High School.
CAMDEN -- "I can take two more," a volunteer called out as she stood in front of several makeshift dressing rooms in the Camden High School gym Saturday afternoon.
A line of young women stretched down the floor, between racks of colorful gowns and a section of chairs for the weary to rest, as they patiently waited for their turn to try on the dresses they selected.
After a wild morning rush, a steady stream of girls and their families browsed through the vibrant dresses during Project: Prom, a free prom dress giveaway coordinated by Donna Drummonds.
Drummonds, who retired after 30 years as community school coordinator in the Camden School District, started the event nine years ago, giving out gently worn dresses.
This year, approximately 3,000 dresses -- donated by promgirl.com -- were up for grabs to any young lady looking for that perfect dress.
The giveaway was open to everyone, not just those in the Camden City School District. Students from Cherry Hill East High School, Haddon Township High School and Philadelphia also participated in the event.
People have needs in every community, said Drummonds. "They're just hidden differently."
"Every lady that has come through the door today has left with a dress -- from the teenager to the mom to the grandmom."
Camden High School senior Lenaami Morton, 18, took only 30 minutes to find a dress for her prom.
Morton said that the event was well put together, and there was a "good selection of dresses."
According to Roslyn Hunter-Harris, fulfillment coordinator from promgirl.com, two-piece, print and burgundy dresses are the popular style and color this year.
"A print bottom with a solid top, or any variation," said Harris.
The average cost for an prom dress is around $250-$300, according to Harris. But that, of course, doesn't include the shoes, hair, makeup and accessories to accompany the dress.
Diane Piotrowicz walked the gym floor holding several dresses as she waited for her daughter, Aliya Littles, a Camden High School senior, to emerge from the dressing room.
"This makes my daughter feel like a princess," said Piotrowicz.
