Honored for for her tireless advocacy for animals
CAMDEN -- Sen. Nilsa Cruz Perez (D-Camden/Gloucester) has been named one of the Humane Society of New Jersey's Legislators of the Year for 2016 for her tireless advocacy for animals in our state and across the country.
"I am so grateful to the Humane Society for this honor, and for highlighting the important legislation we're championing in New Jersey to protect animals large and small," said Cruz Perez. "From Nosey's Law protecting elephants in traveling circuses to banning the sale of dogs bred in puppy mills, we are working to give a voice to those who do not have one."
The Humane Society cited Cruz Perez's actions and leadership on many animal rights bills which have come through the Senate Economic Growth Committee, of which she is the vice chair. She has partnered with Chairman Lesniak on several key initiatives aimed at ending animal cruelty and bringing those who perpetuate it to justice.
Nosey's Law would prohibit traveling acts with elephants from doing business with New Jersey. The law is named after a 34-year-old African elephant which is still active in traveling shows despite having severe arthritis and being kept in inhumane conditions. Cruz Perez has also introduced legislation providing immunity from civil liability for the rescue of animals from parked vehicles under inhumane conditions.
"The Humane Society has been such a strong partner in our efforts to protect vulnerable animals throughout our state and the country," Cruz Perez went on to say. "I want to thank them for their advocacy each and every day."
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the nation's largest animal protection organization. Along with their affiliates, the HSUS provides hands-on care and services to more than 100,000 animals each year and provide education and training for local organizations.
