Gavyn Connolly died in April 2016 after she was struck by a car as she crossed Route 42.
WOODBURY -- A grand jury has indicted a Stratford man in connection with a 2016 fatal accident in which a Sicklerville teen was struck by a car while leaving a Washington Township carnival.
Sterling B. Knight, 22, was originally charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, but was indicted this week only on the second-degree charge of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident that resulted in death.
Gavyn Connolly, a Timber Creek Regional High School student, and two other teens were leaving a carnival hosted by the Washington Township football program booster club in the parking lot of The Dump Furniture Outlet on Route 42 on the evening of April 23, 2016, when she was struck.
Knight was driving a 2011 Toyota Yaris southbound on Route 42 when he hit Connolly as she was in the shoulder of the roadway.
He was "unlawfully passing and traveling at an unsafe speed for the shoulder" when the accident occurred, according to the complaint signed by police.
Knight initially left the scene of the accident but returned a few minutes later, authorities said.
He was charged five months later in September.
