Police say some roads will have checks in "late-evening" hours.

CHERRY HILL -- Police here have announced plans to deploy sobriety checkpoints over the Memorial Day Weekend.

Officials said the enforcement would be during "late-evening hours." It was not immediately reported on which roads the checkpoints will be located.

Major roads crossing through Cherry Hill include Routes 70, 38, Interstate 295 and the New Jersey Turnpike. Local police generally patrol state highways, such as 70 and 38, but not interstates, such as 295 and the turnpike.

"These checkpoints are designed to make roadways safer by deterring and apprehending intoxicated drivers," a police statement said. "High-visibility enforcement and media attention have made checkpoints an effective tool in removing impaired drivers from the roadways."

Alcohol-related traffic fatalities accounted for 25 percent of the state's 562 fatalities in 2015, according to federal statistics, local authorities said. Nationally, 10,265 alcohol-related traffic fatalities were recorded the same year.
