$5 million observation tower no longer coming to Camden

Skyview Tower was announced in late 2013 and touted as a global tourist destination.

CAMDEN -- Plans for a $5 million observation tower at the Camden waterfront -- which would have stood 25 stories tall -- have been called off, backers of the project confirmed.

Skyview Tower, which was announced in late 2013 and touted as a global tourist destination, was to be funded by Adventure Aquarium's parent company, Herschend Family Entertainment.

"The proposal for the Skyview Tower prototype was promising; however, the concept did not successfully translate into an attainable project," a statement from Vince Nicoletti, executive director and vice president of Adventure Aquarium, reads.

"Adventure Aquarium will continue to consider future projects that entertain families for years to come," Nicoletti's statement continued.

The open-air gondola would have been situated next to the aquarium and capable of carrying 30 people 300 feet up, offering views of Camden, the Delaware River and the Philadelphia skyline.

According to an NJ Advance Media report following the October 2013 announcement, plans for the tower were five years in the making and local officials said the state's Economic Opportunity Act helped push the project to fruition. Construction was expected to begin in spring 2014. The project was in partnership with U.K.-based Skyview Company.

Those still seeking sky-high views of Philadelphia, Camden and the Delaware River can visit One Liberty Observation Deck, which recently opened in Center City. That attraction offers views from the 57th floor of One Liberty Place.
