The man continued to fight and resist police as they brought him to the river bank.
CAMDEN -- Quick-thinking officers jumped into the Delaware River to save a suicidal man who appeared to be in danger of drowning Monday afternoon.
Members of the sheriff's department and the Camden County Police Department were able to get the man back to the river bank, despite his resistance, according to a county press release.
Sgt. Bob Plews and Investigator Jake Sidwa of the sheriff's office responded to the area of Pearl Street in North Camden and saw the man standing on a bulkhead in only his underwear. The man jumped in the river and swam away from the shore, according to the release.
The officers removed their gear, jumped in and were able to stop the man about 50 yards out into the water.

Metro police officers Joseph Olivo, Daniel Fiori and Alex Rodriguez also jumped in and helped drag the man, who was flailing and yelling, to safety.
He was taken by medical personnel and Camden County Metro Police to Cooper University Hospital.
Camden County Freeholder Louis Cappelli Jr. praised the officers for their bravery and professionalism.
"These officers all put service before self by jumping into the river, their quick action is the reason this man is still alive today," he said in the release.
