Police said the man went into Winslow Township High School in order to escape the inclement weather.

WINSLOW TWP. -- A homeless man seeking shelter from the rain was arrested after police said he was found wandering into Winslow Township High School Wednesday morning.

Custodians at the schools said they saw the man -- identified as Michael Evans, 35 --  walking through the doors at about 6:40 a.m., and escorted him out of the building before they called police.

Police located Evans -- whose last known address was in Lindenwold -- walking on Cooper Folly Road and took him into custody. After interviewing him, police said he was trying to get out of the inclement weather.

Township police searched the school along with the Camden county Sheriff's Department K-9 to see if there were any other unauthorized people inside. None were found.

The incident happened before students arrived for the school day. Arriving buses took students to the Winslow Township Middle School while authorities searched the high school.

Evans was charged with defiant trespassing and held in the Camden County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.
