WEST DEPTFORD -- On behalf of area animal shelters and organizations, Senate President Steve Sweeney, Assembly Deputy Speaker John Burzichelli, and Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro are leading a collection drive for food and assorted items for shelter animals.

"Animal shelters provide an important service in caring for animals in need and they assist in caring for relinquished pets, so that they may be adopted into another home," said Senator Sweeney.

"Shelter facilities provide a safe environment for animals that are without a home," added Assemblyman Burzichelli. "Every item donated to the shelter aids in the care and well-being of the animals residing there."

During the month of December through Jan. 15, 2016 the Third Legislative District offices will be collecting food items, cleaning products and assorted goods for local animal shelters and animal friendly organizations.

Suggested items for the shelter include wild bird feed, canned cat/kitten food with pull tops, dog/puppy food, reptile food, small animal food, scoopable kitty litter, various treats for cats and dogs (made in the U.S.), plastics balls and catnip for cats, and hard rubber dog toys. No rawhide items please. Other items such as fabric softener sheets, anti-bacterial soap, AA and AAA batteries, lint brushes and yarn for cat toys are also accepted. Monetary/gift card donations can only be accepted directly at the shelters and organizations.

Shelters are also in desperate need of bleach, HE-only laundry detergent, Cascade powdered dishwasher detergent, and small animal food for guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets and the like.

Donated items can be dropped off to the Third District offices at Kingsway Commons, 935 Kings Highway, Suite 400 in West Deptford or at the Finlaw Building, 199 East Broadway, Suite G in Salem City. Residents may also drop off items at the District's Bridgeton Satellite office on Dec. 1 and Jan. 5 at the Bridgeton Library, on East Commerce Street.

"These donated items are excellent contributions in keeping homeless animals in good health," noted Assemblyman Taliaferro.

If residents would like more information on the Third Legislative District's animal shelter collection, please call the West Deptford District office at 856-251-9801.
